Reviewing System Features 3-9
RAID Subsystem
The system board is equipped with a RAIDport connector,
and is RAIDport-card ready. A RAIDport card used in
conjunction with the SCSI subsystem and the devices
connected to it function as a SCSI RAID subsystem.
RAID stands for Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. A
RAID array is a grouping of disks that can function as one
storage solution. By using disks collectively, the impact of
individual disk failure is lessened on the system as a whole.
RAID levels 0 and 1 are supported with the RAID
subsystem; they function slightly differently and each offers
specific performance benefits. Cost and speed of transaction
each have varying roles according to RAID levels.
Level 0 (data striping)
Data is saved between two disks. Level 0 provides very
good performance, through a disk failure still presents
the possibility of loss of half the data saved to the array.
Level 1 (mirroring)
All data is duplicated from one drive to another. There is
little performance enhancement in a redundant array, but
this is offset by the safety of the data, since the
likelihood of data loss is minimal.
More than one level can be used in a multiple-drive RAID.
Flash ROM
The NEC Flash ROM allows fast, economical BIOS
upgrades. NEC Flash ROMs are reprogrammable system
and video EPROMs.
With NEC Flash ROM, a ROM BIOS change:
is fast and easily done using a Flash utility
eliminates the expensive replacement of ROM BIOS
chips, and reduces system maintenance costs
