Smart Booster v 1.65B

The SB5 Smart Booster adds expanded and updated features to a Power Cab
DCC system. The first and most noticeable feature is additional power (5 Amps)
to run trains and accessories.

Your PowerCab used with the SB5 can now be unplugged and used in true
walk around fashion. It no longer needs to remain connected for the system to
work.

Up to 6 cabs can be used with the SB5 (Cab address range 2 through 7).

Equipped Cabs have up to six recalls each when used with the SB5.

Additional 5 Amp boosters (DB5) may be added to the SB5 for even more
power handling on larger layouts.

This manual covers only the addition and installation of the SB5 to a Power Cab
system. For operation consult your Power Cab manual.

The SB5 does NOT have a programming track output. The basic Power Cab
provides this capability.

INSTALLING THE NCE

SB3A/

SB5 UPGRADE CHIP

1.

Unplug the

SB3A/

SB5.

2.

Remove the 2 screws that hold the top to the bottom of
the  case.

3.

Carefully work the top of the case up and off. Set aside.

4.

Locate the

Microprocessor  chip
along the right hand
side of the case. It is
the largest chip
inside the

SB3A/

SB5.

5.

Use a small Flat screw driver or hobby knife to

separate  the
Microprocessor  chip  from
the  socket.  Make  sure  you
pry  BETWEEN  the  socket
and the chip. Work end to

end lifting a little on one end, then a little on the other end.
Pry the Microprocessor chip straight up from the socket. You will no longer need
this chip but hang on to it for the time being.

6. The new Microprocessor chip may come to you with its legs
slightly splayed outward. You will need to bend these legs so
that they are straight down from the sides of the chip. Place the
chip on a flat, hard surface as shown in the diagram and bend
the body of the chip so that the legs are straight. Repeat with

the opposite side legs.

7. There is a small “U” shaped indent or dimple in one end of the chip.
This is the TOP of the chip. Place the chip on the socket with this “U”
shape toward the rear of the case.

8. Align the legs to the socket. When satisfied that ALL of the legs are in
line with a socket position, press the new chip down into the socket.
Work from end to end, press a little on one end, then a little on the other
end. Keep doing this until the Microprocessor chip is FULLY seated in
the  socket.

9. Examine the installation to ensure ALL 28 of the legs have

engaged  the  socket  correctly.

10. Replace the top of the case and the 2 screws that hold the top to

the bottom. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SCREWS. You could

inadvertently break the screw boss inside the case.

11. Plug the

SB3A/

SB5 back into your railroad and enjoy the greatest train control in model

railroading!

Make sure none of the legs
are bent under or outside
the  socket.
