6 Operation
6.1 Putting the engine into operation after extended out-of-service
periods (>3 months)
Preconditions

Engine is stopped and starting disabled.
☑ MTU Preservation and Represervation Specifications (A001070/..) available.
Putting the engine into operation after extended out-of-service-periods (>3
months)

Engine Depreserve (→ MTU Preservation and Represervation Specifications
A001070/..).
Valve drive Lubricate valve drive every ≥ 6 months (→ Page 203).
Lube oil system Check engine oil level (→ Page 271).
Engines with lube oil priming pump: Prime the engine for 20 seconds at a
pressure of at least 0.3 bar.
Only for engines without oil priming pump: Crank engine on starting system
without injecting fuel (→ Page 191).
Fuel prefilter Fill with fuel (→ Page 239), (→ Page 241).
Fuel prefilter, pressure
gauge Check low pressure indicator on switchable fuel prefilter (→ Page 238).
Coolant circuit If engine is out of service for more than one year, change engine coolant
(→ Page 282).
Change charge-air coolant (→ Page 306).
Coolant circuit Check engine coolant level (→ Page 280);
Check charge-air coolant level (→ Page 304).
Coolant circuit Heat engine coolant with coolant preheater.
Engine governor Check plug-in connections (→ Page 323).
Monitoring system Carry out lamp test (see manufacturer's documentation).
Engine/generator control
system Switch on.
Select operating mode, e.g. MANUAL OPERATION, AUTOMATIC OPERATION.
HP fuel pump Only for engines without oil priming pump:
Fill HP fuel pump with fresh engine oil (→ Page 209).
Throttle flap Initiate teach-in routine (→ Page 248).
Exhaust gas aftertreatment
system Out-of-service period exceeding 6 months:
Depending on storage conditions, flush out RA system with fresh reducing
agent (→ Preservation and Represervation Specifications (A001070/…)).
Out-of-service period exceeding 24 months:
Flush out RA system with fresh reducing agent and replace filter of the pre-
feed module and the supply units (→ Preservation and Represervation Speci-
fications (A001070/…)).
