Cutting and drilling the blanks
Cut 19mm or larger pen blanks to
the size of the brass tubes (add
27mm for trimming). Mark the
centre of each blank.
Drill a 12mm hole through the
upper, shorter blank and a 10mm
hole through the lower, longer
blank.
Either use a drill press with the
blank secured in a vice or clamp or
use your lathe with a drill bit
mounted into the tailstock chuck.
To prevent cracking or chipping of
the wood when the drill bit exits the
other end of the blank, stop drilling
3mm before the bit drill reaches the
end of the blank and then trim the
end of the blank using a saw to
expose the hole.
Glue the brass tube into the blank
Using 220 grit sandpaper, lightly scuff the exterior of the brass tube to prepare it for gluing.
Apply a thin layer of superglue or epoxy to the tube and insert the tube into the blank. Rotate the tube as you
push it into the blank to spread the glue evenly – this must be done fairly quickly to avoid getting the barrel stuck
before it’s inside the blank.
Position the tube inside the blank so that the wood extends beyond the tube on both ends to allow for trimming.
Turning the blanks
Refer to Diagram B.
Mount the spacer bushings onto the mandrel then the tip bushing. Slide the lower blank on
and follow with the centre bushing, shorter diameter first. Slide the upper blank (shorter) on next. Finally slide
the cap bushing (wider diameter) wide end in last. Mount the spacer bushings to fill the space to the treads on
the mandrel. Screw on the lock nut hand tight and bring the tailstock in snug to the mandrel. Lock in place.
Do not
over tighten the lock-nut, it could damage the mandrel.
Turn the blanks close to the bushing diameter with sharp tools; sand the barrels to match the bushing diameter.
Finish the wood with your choice of polish.
