Phone-Specific Licensing
The MiVoice Office 250 supports a three-tier licensing plan for IP phones. Category A licensing
primarily allows use of Mitel Advanced IP phones. Category B licensing allows use of the Mitel 8602
IP softphone. Category C licensing primarily allows use of legacy 86xx phones. Category D licensing
allows use of the Mitel 5212, 5224, 5304, 5312, 5324, 5320, 5330, 5340, and 5360 IP phones. For
details, see Table 1, “Phone License Categories,” on page 2-47 .
Types of IP Phones
The following list identifies the types of IP phones that operate on the Inter-Tel 5000 platforms. For
specifications and illustrations of the phones, see “Phones” on page 101.
• IP mode only, including 5212, 5224, 5304, 5312, 5324, 5320, 5330, 5340, and 5360. Also
includes 8602, 8660, 8664, 8665, 8668, and Multi-protocol (IP only), including 8600, 8620, 8622,
8662, and 8690
• IP Single-Line Adapter
Phone License Activation Process
Although you can program IP phones into the database without having an adequate number of
licenses, the system allows only the number of phones to come online for which licenses exist. The
system assigns licenses to phones on a first-come, first-served basis. However, once the available
licenses have been assigned, the system prevents additional IP phones from coming online. As
additional IP phone licenses are loaded into software, the system brings programmed but unactivated

When IP phones fail to come online, the Message Print log identifies the excluded phone extensions.
At the same time, Alarm #127—Unlicensed IP device failed to come online—appears on the unit
chassis LCD panel and on the administrator phone display(s). For details, refer to the

Digital Telephone Licensing
The system can support up to four DEI units, and each unit supports up to 48 digital telephones.
Instead of using Digital Expansion Interface (DEI) licensing, digital telephones are now licensed the
same way that IP phones are licensed in the system. Starting with v4.0, a new category E license
has been added for digital telephones. When upgrading existing systems to v4.0 or later, the AMC
will convert the old DEI licensing model to the category E licensing model. Each DEI license is
converted to 48 category E licenses. Note that SLAs attached to digital circuits do not require a
license.
Because the DEI units are identical, the distinction between them is determined by the cabling order
and selection in DB Programming. The unit that is cabled directly to the Base Server is the first unit,
and the unit that is cabled to the first DEI unit is the second unit, and so on.
