USAF Arctic C-47
The twin engine C-47A Dakota first entered service in the late 1930’s as the DC-3 civilian airliner.
The military version, the C-47A was used throughout World War 2 and continued to be used by
United States armed forces long after the Second World War.
This model represents a United States Air Force C-47A equipped with skis for operation in the far
north that often required landing on fields of snow and ice. This C-47’s was used to supply and
maintain distant weather stations operated under the Joint Arctic Weather Stations agreement
between the United States and Canada. Now abandon, the Isachsen weather station was located in
the remote arctic islands of Sverdrup which was said to have the worst weather in Canada.
