Handpiece Maintenance Instructions
After each use:
1.
Disconnect handpiece from coupler.
2.
Remove bur from chuck.
3.
Scrub and rinse under warm tap water with a soft
brush or sponge making sure to keep head up to
prevent excess water from getting into the back of the handpiece. Make
sure fiber optic port near head of handpiece is scrubbed well.
4.
Dry handpiece with a gauze pad or paper towel.
5.
Insert handpiece into sterilization bag and load into
autoclave. Midwest recommends using sterilization
bags with at least one paper side. Handpieces should
be processed in the autoclave for 15 minutes at
sterilization temperature of 135˚C (275˚F). For cassette
chamber saturated steam devices, handpieces should be
processed unbagged for 3.5 minutes at sterilization tem-
perature of 135˚C (275˚F). STEAM STERILIZE ONLY. Do
not use other means such as dry heat or chemical.
6.
The Stylus EasyCare handpiece is now ready t
o use.
Weekly or as-needed maintenance:
If the push button gets stiff:
• Place 1-drop of Midwest Plus Handpiece Lubricant
(#380130) into chuck.
To clean water spray holes:
• Run the cleaning wire (supplied with handpiece) back
and forth in the four outer water spray holes and in the
four inner air spray holes to loosen and remove any
mineral build-up.
To remove debris from fiber optics:
• Gently rub both ends of the fiber optic element with an
alchol soaked cotton swab.
CAUTION:
Other than weekly chuck lubrication as described,
DO NOT
apply or
spray cleaners or lubricants into your Midwest Stylus EasyCare handpiece.
Cleaners and lubricants will damage the sealed bearings.
Note:
If you do lubricate the handpiece by accident, you must continue
lubricating the handpiece between patients. Once the handpiece has been
lubricated even one time, it will require on-going lubrication.

Use only Midwest products recommended by DENTSPLY
to maintain your handpiece.

debris appears, spray another 1-second burst.

Run handpiece, without a bur, for a minimum of 30 seconds on the hose
or use a Midwest Air Station (#380800) and a Maintenance Coupler
(#380090) until the handpiece reaches normal speed and all
excess cleaner/lube has been expelled.
6.
Wipe off any excess lubricant on the outside of handpiece with
a dry gauze pad or paper towel.
7.
Insert handpiece into sterilization bag and load into autoclave.
Midwest recommends using sterilization bags with at least one
paper side. Handpieces should be processed in the autoclave
for 15 minutes at sterilization temperature of 135˚C (275˚F). For
cassette chamber saturated steam devices, handpieces should be

• Spray a 1-second burst of Midwest Plus Aerosol Spray into chuck or
place 1-drop of Midwest Plus Handpiece Lubricant (#380130) into chuck.
To remove debris from fiber optics:
• Gently rub both ends of the fiber optic element with an alcohol soaked cotton swab.
If sluggishness occurs:
• Place handpiece, head down, in a beaker of Midwest Plus Handpiece
Cleaner (#380140).
• Place beaker in ultrasonic cleaner for 10 minutes.
• Clean, lubricate, and sterilize per recommended Midwest maintenance instructions.

all excess cleaner has been expelled.

Place 3 drops of Midwest Plus Handpiece Lubricant into the
drive air tube.

Run handpiece for a minimum of 30 seconds until it reaches

pad or paper towel.
9.
Insert handpiece into sterilization bag and load into autoclave. Midwest

ever running/expelling or chuck will back out of the set.

If sluggishness occurs:
• Place handpiece, head down, in a beaker of Midwest Plus Handpiece

• Place beaker in ultrasonic cleaner for 10 minutes.
• Clean, lubricate and sterilize per recommended Midwest
maintenance instructions.
