Alternative Method
CAUTION
Always use a “T” bar or bars that engage in two
opposite notches when you move the bearing
adjusting rings. Do not use a chisel or strike the
adjusting rings with a hammer. Damage to
components can result.
1.
Loosen bearing adjusting ring “Y” until axial
clearance of the bearings is obtained.
2. Tighten same ring “X” until the backlash of
the hypoid set teeth is eliminated (Zero
clearance).
NOTE:
Tightening must be gradual so that the ring
does not press on the bearing (cup and cone) after
the ring gear presses against the drive pinion.
3.
Measure the distance between opposite
surfaces of the bearing caps (diagonals A and
B) with a micrometer and record the
measurement.
Figure 8.6
.
4.
Loosen same ring “X” three or four notches or
holes. Tighten ring “Y” gradually to expand
the bearing caps between 0.006- to 0.013-inch
(0.15-0.33 mm) for new bearings or
0.003- to 0.006-inch (0.08-0.16 mm) for used
bearings, which is the bearing preload.
5.
Measure again and compare this distance with
the results obtained in Step 3.
Figure 8.7
.
6.
Check if the expansion specified in Step 4
was obtained.
O
If the dimension obtained is less than the
specifications:
Repeat the tightening
process, alternating with measuring/
comparison until the specified expansion
is reached.
7.
The differential case (flange and plain half)
and the lock plate must be inspected and
replaced if they present assembly difficulties.
8.
Check the runout of the rear surface of the ring
gear.
Figure 8.8
. If the value is greater than
0.019-inches (0.20 mm), check the causes
and correct.
