WARNING
The drive shaft of the live power take-off can turn with
the engine running.
There is a risk of injury.
Perform emergency shifting of the live power take-off
only when the vehicle is stationary, the parking brake
is applied and the engine is off.
If the transmission-independent power take-off fails, you can
make or release a rigid connection for power transmission in
the power take-off. When switching off manually, make sure
that the power take-off is not under load. Switch pumps, for
example, to zero delivery.
VariantAandBofpowertake-off
Vehicles with variant B of the power take-off (N4W or N4X)
can be identified by the external clutch actuator.

Heavy duty trucks:
Depending on the vehicle equipment installed, the trans
-
mission-driven power take-off uses a propeller shaft to drive
hydraulic pumps for the following systems:
• Semitrailer/trailer hydraulic systems
• Rear fan
• Additional water pump
• Leading axle steering
If the propeller shaft fails, the malfunctions described below
will occur.
Ë
If the steering of the leading axle fails, the rear wheels
may steer the wrong way when reversing. Reverse
travel with the wheels steered the wrong way can lead
to damage.
M
Activate the starting-off aid (special equipment) to unload
the leading axle.
• Semitrailer or trailer: Failure of the raising, lowering and
self-steering functions etc.
• Failure of the rear fan and additional water pump:
M
Pay attention to the coolant temperature, especially when
moving off and braking with the turbo retarder coupling.
• Failure of the rear cooling system:
M
Detach all plug contacts at the control unit of the rear
cooling system. The control unit is located behind the
paneling in the right-hand stowage compartment on the
cab rear panel.
This activates the rear fan at full power.
