Coolants
The coolant is a m ixture of w ater and
anti-corrosion/antifreeze. In p ro d u c­
tion, the cooling system is filled with
an anti-corrosion/antifreeze-w ater
m ixture offering p rotection to approx.
— 30° C / — 22° F. The red mark on the
tem perature gauge in the instrum ent
clu ste r is matched to this a nti-corro-
sion/antifreeze-w ater m ixture
(approx. boiling point 125° C/257° F).
The p rotection against corrosion is
also ensured by this m ixture making it
unnecessary to add a corrosion
inhibitor.
The coolant remains in the cooling
system all year long and m ust be
renewed after 3 years at the latest.
If coolant is lost, replace missing
quantity w ith w ater (potable water
quality) plus anti-corrosion/antifreeze
o f a recom m ended brand.
For reasons of corrosion inhibition
the minim um p roportion of a nti-corro-
sion/antifreeze m ust be 34 o/o, w hich
gives anti-corrosion/antifreeze p ro­
te ctio n down to - 2 0 ° C / - 4 ° F.
If anti-corrosion/antifreeze is te m p o r­
arily not available, add a corrosion
in h ib ito r to the cooling w ater to
ensure proper p rotection against
corrosion. To treat the cooling water,
do not use more than 1 % (10 cm 3/l)
o f a recom m ended corrosion inhibi­
tor.
W ithout anti-corrosion/antifreeze in
the cooling system, the w ater already
sta rts boiling at approx. 118° C /
224° F, w hich means that the pointer
o f the tem perature gauge in the
instrum ent cluster may still be below
the red mark.
Driving the vehicle w ith o u t a n ti-co rro ­
sion/antifreeze should be done only
in em ergency situations. Add anti­
co rrosion/antifreeze as soon as p o s­
sible.
W hile there may be a num ber of
anti-co rro sio n /a n tifre e ze /co o la n ts
available w hich will provide the requi­
site protection, all such pro d u cts
have not been tested fo r
MERCEDES-BENZ vehicles.
The follow ing product, however, is
recom m ended fo r use in your car:
MERCEDES-BENZ Anti-Freeze and
Sum m er Coolant.
Prior to the onset of the cold season,
check the coolant fo r sufficient
protection to prevent freezing.
Repeat this check during the cold
spell. Regular testing of the anti-cor­
rosion/antifreeze concentration is
carried out only at each MERCEDES-
BENZ maintenance service.
Anti-corrosion/Antifreeze
Y our vehicle contains a num ber of
aluminium parts. The use of alum in­
ium com ponents in m o to r vehicle
engines necessitates that a n ti-co rro ­
s io n /a n tifre e ze /co o la n t used in such
engines be specifically form ulated to
p ro te c t the aluminium parts. (Failure
to use such a n ti-co rro sio n /a n ti­
fre e ze /co o la n t may result in a signifi­
cantly shortened service life.)
