INSPECTION / TEST
1. Input Drive Shaft Inspection
The input drive shaft is a high speed,
highly stressed, dynamically balanced
unit, subject to failure from damage, han­
dling or improper maintenance. It should
be treated like any other fine precision
aircraft component and handled in accor­
dance with the procedures outlined.
An input drive shaft that is subjected to
conditions other than normal operation
conditions, such as, but not limited to sud­
den stoppage, fire, flood, gearbox failure,
hard landing, excessive misalignment,
vibration, etc., must be thoroughly in­
spected and/or replaced.
The inspection procedures called out in
this document are critical. Therefore, it is
mandatory that the requirements for in­
put drive shaft replacement be “strictly
adhered to.”
A. Center Tube
(Ref. Figure 601)
NOTE:
When you look at damage, careful dis­
tinction must be made between the base
metal and the brown-colored primer.
(1). Examine the center tube for dents,
nicks, or scratches.
(2). Measure the depth and diameter of all
dents, nicks, and scratches.
(a). A dent, nick, or scratch that is more
than 0.005 inch (0.13 mm) deep
and 1.00 inch (25.4 mm) long is not
permitted.
(b). Dents that blend smoothly into
adjacent surface area with no sharp
change in contour and are not more
than
0.015 inch (0.38 mm) deep
and 1.00 inch (25.4 mm) long are
permitted.
(c). Nicks and scratches less than 0.005
inch (0.13 mm) deep and 1.00 inch
(25.4 mm) long can be blended out.
(d). If there is a dent, nick, or scratch
more than the specified limits,
replace the input drive shaft.
(3). Examine the center tube for evidence of
deformation.
(a). If there is deformation, replace the
input drive shaft.
B. Flanges
(Ref. Figure 601)
(1). Examine the flange of the shaft for
cracks or fretting.
(a). If there are cracks or fretting, replace
the input drive shaft.
(2). Examine the flange of the shaft for
corrosion.
(a). Corrosion less than 0.006 inch (0.15
mm) deep which can be polished out
is permitted.
(b). If the corrosion is more than 0.006
inch (0.15 mm) deep , replace the
input drive shaft.
(c). If the corrosion marks are more than
0.006 inch (0.15 mm) deep replace
the input drive shaft.
C. Mounting Bolts
(1). Do a torque check on the mounting
bolts.
