Testing the performance of your A/V drives
Using defragmentation programs and disk optimizers
To ensure maximum system performance, we recommend that you use the
Disk Defragmenter utility included with Windows 2000.
The amount of footage you capture to your A/V drives determines how
often you should use your defragmentation utility. On average, however,
you should defragment your A/V drives once a month. Remember to quit
your defragmentation program after each use, that is, do not leave it
running in the background.
However, you should never use an A/V disk optimizer utility, such as
Dr. SCSI, on the A/V drives you use with DigiSuite. These utilities often
bypass the error detection/correction mechanism that ensures the integrity
of your files, and may therefore cause serious problems with DigiSuite (for
example, your system may crash or become unstable).
Access to EIDE drives during capture
If your system includes both SCSI and EIDE drives, do not create or
access files on your EIDE drives while capturing or playing back material
on your SCSI A/V drives. Doing so may interrupt the capture or playback
process if you don’t have the correct bus-mastering EIDE settings.
Configure your DMA settings for EIDE drives
If your system has an EIDE hard drive, you must enable DMA bus-
mastering for that drive. How you do this depends on the equipment in
your system. There are three main approaches.
Automatic DMA enabling
Some motherboards with built-in EIDE
controllers automatically detect when a device connected to them is DMA
capable and thus automatically enable DMA bus-mastering for that device.
In this case, the
DMA
checkbox in the device’s property page may not be
available. Consult your motherboard documentation for details.
DMA enabling utilities
Several motherboard manufacturers ship their
product with a small software program you need to run in order to enable
DMA. In this case, the
DMA checkbox or option in the device’s property
page may not be available. Consult your motherboard or computer
documentation for instructions on using the utility program.
