Multi VLAN
You can configure Multi-VLAN parameters on the Ethernet WAN port of NAVAN if your service provider supports
VLAN feature. Instead of having multiple physical WAN interfaces to avail different services of the service provider
(for example, VoIP communication (for voice) or Internet access (for data) or MPLS service for site-to-site
connection), NAVAN’s single Ethernet WAN interface can be configured to add/remove appropriate VLAN tags to/
from the data packets such that traffic is segregated according to the intended services at the service provider’s
end.
For example, your office may use the NAVAN’s Ethernet WAN connection from a service provider to avail different
services; for example, VoIP service for voice calling, MPLS service for site-to-site connection and Internet access.
On the remote end, the service provider uses a VLAN capable switch to segregate the traffic sent from your
NAVAN’s Ethernet WAN port and route them to the appropriate gateways dedicated to specific services (that is,
VoIP service or MPLS service). For example, the switch may route the VoIP traffic to Gateway1 (say, having IP as
192.168.10.1) while it may route the MPLS connection specific traffic to Gateway2 (say, having IP as 192.168.11.1).
The VLAN switch can also do the reverse process in which it aggregates the traffic from the different gateways (that
is, Gateway1 and Gateway2) into a single Ethernet link connected to your NAVAN’s WAN port.
In such a condition, NAVAN’s Ethernet WAN must be configured in a way such that it can add appropriate VLAN
tags to the data packets according to their destination addresses while sending them to the VLAN switch. The
destination address depends on the intended service (that is, VoIP or MPLS or Internet) for which the packets are
to be routed. The switch will only check the VLAN tags to segregate the incoming data traffic at its end and route
them to the appropriate gateways.
In reverse, NAVAN’s Ethernet WAN will be able to remove VLAN tags when it receives packets from the VLAN
switch.
To do that, you must enable Multi-VLAN on Ethernet WAN and configure the VLANs (on the Sub Interfaces)
corresponding to the required VLAN tags according to which the packets will be distributed by the service provider’s
switch. Refer the example diagram below which displays a typical scenario for Multi VLAN implementation.
