Exhaust gas temperatures

A comparison of the exhaust gas temperatures with the records of the acceptance test and the sea

trails is best suited to assess the thermodynamic performance of the engine and to analyse any de-

viations from the brand new condition of the engine (supercharging, injection, combustion). Injec-

tion pump or nozzle wear, for instance, will have direct effect on the thermal engine performance.

The influence of the prevailing air intake conditions on the engine data must be seen and taken into

account.

The

exhaust gas temperatures after the cylinders

may not be employed for an exact assessment of

the performance of each cylinder, because the exhaust temperatures of the individual cylinders read

by the thermometers are heavily influenced by the whirling effects in the exhaust collector pipe. Any

deviations among the cylinders within the scope of the values mentioned on the acceptance test re-

cords or below are perfectly normal despite balanced cylinder power figures of the various cylin-

ders. Such a measurement has therefore only a restricted meaningfulness, which may lead to false

conclusions.

Attention:

It is not permitted to alter the position of the fuel racks or the delivery data of a cylinder to
obtain the same temperature readings. This invalidates the balance of cylinder perfor-
mances.

Provided the fuel cam setting is correct, the fuel rack position of the injection pump is decisive for
balancing the cylinder power values.

The temperatures after cylinder, however, should not deviate more than

+/- 30 K

from the average

value in the acceptance test record

Check the temperature after the cylinder regularily.
