4. Installation
This chapter contains step-by-step instructions for installing, connecting and
verifying the operation of the CrossFire 8300 Switch Stacker.
Mounting the Chassis
The CrossFire 8300 Switch Stacker can be mounted in any standard 19-inch rack
or cabinet. The installation area should be near a power source and should have
enough room around the front and back panels for cabling and access to controls.

Warning: Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or
replace this equipment.
Rack or Cabinet Mounting
When mounting the equipment in a closed or multi-unit rack, observe the
environmental guidelines in
Chapter 3, “Preparing for Installation” .

Note: To accommodate a stack of the full eight switch units, leave enough space
above the switch stacker for three switch units, and enough space below for five
switch units. In order for the stacker link cable to reach all units, the switches must
be cabled in a particular order, as shown in Figure 6 on page 22.

Caution: The following rack mounting instructions need to be observed to ensure
that the CrossFire 8300 Switch Stacker and any other equipment are mechanically
stable.
The following steps describe how to mount the CrossFire 8300 Switch Stacker in a
rack or cabinet:
1. Remove the bracket covers on each side of the CrossFire 8300 Switch Stacker
to expose the rack mounting brackets. Access the retaining screws by opening
the cap on the front of each bracket cover. Use the Allen key supplied with the
switch stacker to remove the two 6 mm Allen screws. When you have removed
the screws, push the bracket cover towards the back of the switch and lift the
cover off. Keep the screws for later use.
