Downloading Files
11-2
Using the LI-6400
11
Eventually youÕll want to move files from the LI-6400 to your computer, or
even load files back onto the LI-6400. When you do, you have three options:
1
Use FX software
FX is available for DOS or Windows or Macintosh. These programs are
found on the LI-6400 CD (ÒUsing the LI-6400Ó, Edition 2), and can also be
downloaded from CORE support in LI-CORÕs web site (www.licor.com).
These programs allow for very easy file transfer in either direction, all con-
trolled from the computer. In addition, one can do other file system opera-
tions, such as remove files or directories, defragment, etc.
2
Use EW
EW is essentially FX, but with a command line interface. This program can
be found on the CD and web site, and is also used for software installation.
3
Use the Filer
Run a generic communications program on your computer (such as Hyper-
Terminal), and specify a destination file. On the LI-6400, use the Filer to tag
and send (via print) all files you want downloaded. LI-COR has data capture
programs for DOS (part number 1000-90) and Macintosh (1000-91).
Options 1 and 2 are the best. File names and structures are preserved, data is
error checked, and both are quite painless to use. Also, you neednÕt worry
about configuring the LI-6400Õs comm port when using FX or EW - itÕs au-
tomatic.
Option 3 works, but is sort of a last resort. If you want to preserve the
LI-6400Õs file structure on your computer (that is, each LI-6400 file retains
itÕs original name, rather than being all lumped together in a single file on
your computer), itÕs more work, because you download files one at a time,
and name the destination files one at a time. To put files back onto the LI-
6400, you must run a capture program on the LI-6400 (thereÕs one called
“Sim-
ple Terminal”
in
/Sys/Utilities
- see page 21-19). Again, though, itÕs a one at a time
process. Another possible problem with option 3 is that no error checking is
done on the data transfer: whatÕs received may or may not be what is sent. If
you work at 9600 baud or less, you should be OK, however.
