5. If you are instructed to return the old heat sink, follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging
materials that are supplied to you for shipping.
Installing the heat sink
To install the heat sink, do the following:
1. Touch the static-protective package that contains the new heat sink to any unpainted surface on the
outside of the server. Then, remove the heat sink from the package.
Note: Before installing the new heat sink, use the cleaning pad that comes with the heat sink to wipe
the thermal grease from the top of the microprocessor. Dispose of the cleaning pad after all thermal
grease is removed from the microprocessor.
2. Remove any protective cover that protects the thermal grease on the bottom of the heat sink. Do
not touch the thermal grease.
3. Place the heat sink on the system board so that the four screws on the heat sink are inserted into
the corresponding holes in the system board.
4. Install the four screws to secure the heat sink on the system board. It is recommended that you carefully
install the four screws using the following method to avoid any possible damage to the system board.
a. Partially tighten screw

, then firmly tighten screw

, and then return to screw

and firmly tighten
it. Do not over-tighten the screws.
b. Partially tighten screw 3 , then firmly tighten screw 4 , and then return to screw 3 and firmly tighten
it. Do not over-tighten the screws.

5. Reinstall the air baffle. See “Installing the air baffle” on page 51.
