21 Digital Output Wiring
For typical use of the digital output, refer to the figure below. The open collector output drives an external
relay, which in turn drives an output device.
Note: Inductive load (relay or strike) switching causes EMI (electromagnetic interference) that can
interfere with normal operation of other equipment. To minimize premature contact failure and
to increase system reliability, use a contact protection circuit. Locate the protection circuit as
close to the load as possible (12 inches [30cm] recommended). The circuit's effectiveness
decreases if it is located further away.
• For The external relay’s coil current must be restricted to 40 mA.
• The 5 V relay coil resistance must be 125 ohms or greater.
• The 12 V relay coil resistance must be 300 ohms or greater.
• The 24 V relay coil resistance must be 600 ohms or greater.
