You must set the movable hairline to account for
the declination in your area. If you are using a
Suunto KB-14D compass, set the declination
crosshair by moving it east or west of the magnetic
crosshair by half the number of degrees of the
declination value. For example, if the declination in
your area is 10
°
E, set the movable hairline so it is 5
degrees to the left of the fixed hairline. If the
declination is 10
°
W, set the movable hairline 5
degrees to the right of the fixed hairline. Test this
on a target and take readings with each line to
ensure that you get the full value between the two
azimuths. If you are using a different compass,
please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for
setting declination.
Note for Criterion Users
If you are using a Criterion staff, subtract 5 inches
(0.42 feet) from the number silk-screened at the
bottom of the staff.
