Hydrostatic Drive System
!
DANGER
Hydraulic fluid under pressure can penetrate skin. Wear
protective gloves and safety glasses or goggles when working
with hydraulic systems. Use a piece of cardboard or wood
rather than hands when searching for hydraulic leaks. If
hydraulic fluid is injected into the skin, it must be treated by a
doctor within a few hours or gangrene may result.
!
WARNING
Always wear adequate eye protection when servicing the
hydraulic system.
The ZST Series are equipped with two independent
Hydro-Gear ZT-2200
TM
Integrated Zero-Turn Transaxle
units. The units are located beneath the seat. See
“Accessing Area Beneath the Seat” on page 14 for
instructions to pivot seat platform up. These units are self
contained and maintenance free. They do not require oil
changes. However, if the oil has been contaminated or
has been added, an oil change may alleviate certain
performance problems. If needed, have your nearest
Authorized Land Pride Service department change your
mower’s transaxle. Check oil level in a transaxle only if it
shows signs of leaking, is operating hot, is noisy or if unit
lacks power after operating it for a short time.
Transaxle Oil Check & Filling
Refer to Figure 5-8:
The mower has two independent hydrostatic transaxles.
Each transaxle will require separate oil checks. It is best
to check oil when the oil in the transaxle is between
50
o
and 100
o
F. See page 45 for oil specifications.
IMPORTANT: Do not use a high pressure washer
on or around the hydraulic transaxles. Water
intrusion will result and void the warranty.
IMPORTANT: Oil changes and repairs to a
transaxle unit should be performed by trained
technicians only.
NOTE: The transaxle units are equipped with bypass
valves. For more information refer to “Moving Mower
with Stalled Engine” on page 14.
IMPORTANT: A transaxle must be purged anytime
oil has been added to the unit or when unit has been
opened to facilitate maintenance.
IMPORTANT: Clean debri from around fill cap
before checking or adding oil to the unit.
NOTE: Be certain to place control arms in the park
position before rotating seat platform up.
1.
Park mower on a flat level surface. Stop engine and
remove ignition key. Make sure blade engagement
switch is in the down (OFF) position. Spread
control levers fully apart and set park brake in (ON)
position.
2.
Clean transaxle exterior of any debris especially
around the fill port cap. A degreaser may be needed.
3.
Remove fill port cap.
4.
Measure distance from top of fill port down to oil
level. This distance should be between 3/4" and
1 1/2" with oil temperature between 50
o
and 100
o
F.
5.
Fill transaxle at the fill port with specified oil until oil is
at the correct lever (between 3/4" & 1 1/2" from top of
fill port). See page 45 for transaxle oil specifications.
6.
Install top port cap and tighten.
7.
Recheck oil level once unit has be operated for
approximately 1 minute.
8.
Purge each transaxle that has had oil added to
remove any air that may have become trapped. See
“Transaxle Purging Procedures” on page 36.
