Clutch Disassembly, Inspection & Assembly
If clutch run-in indicated that one or more of the friction disks
did not slip, then the clutch must be disassembled to
separate parts.
Refer to Figure 4-2:
1. Allow clutch to cool to ambient temperature before
disassembling it.
2. Remove spring retainer nuts (#1), springs (#2), and
bolts (#3) from the assembly.
3. Each friction disk (#4) must then be separated from
the metal surface adjacent to it.
4. Inspect all parts for excessive wear and condition.
Clean all parts that do not require replacement.
•
The original disk thickness is 1/8" (3 mm) and
should be replaced if it falls below 3/32" (2.4 mm).
5. If the clutch has slipped to the point of “smoking”, the
friction disks may be damaged and should be
replaced. Heat build-up may also affect the yoke
joints.
6. Reassemble each friction disk (#4) next to the metal
plate it was separated from.
7.
Make certain bushing (#5) is positioned as shown.
Install bolts (#3) through the end plates and
intermediate plate as shown.
8. Place springs (#2) over each bolt (#3) and secure
with nuts (#1).
Refer to Figure 4-3:
9. Progressively tighten each spring retainer nut until
correct compressed spring length “A” is reached.
•
A = 1.08" (27 mm).
IMPORTANT:
Refer to Figure 4-3:
Be sure to measure and record spring length ("A”) of
each spring on the clutch before disassembling the
