CVR MENU STRUCTURE
When one of the CVR functions is selected from the Main Menu, the CVR Menu Structures
are as illustrated in Figure 5
5.3.1
CVR: Monitor Menu
The CVR Monitor Menu allows the user to control which audio from the CVR is to be
played over the PI’s speaker or headphone jack. There are six OFF/ON entries on this
menu, one each for three High Quality (HQ) Voice Channels, an HQ Cockpit Area Micro-
phone (CAM) channel, a Standard Quality (SQ) Voice channel, and an SQ CAM channel.
Each channel can be toggled OFF or ON by positioning the highlight over the appropriate
OFF/ON field and pressing the SELECT key.
5.3.1.1
Volume Selection
There are two fields labeled UP and DOWN over which the operator can position the high-
light. Pressing select when the highlight is at either of these fields increases or decreases
the volume through the local speaker. There is a graphical indication at the bottom center
of the menu that indicates the volume currently selected.
5.3.1.2
Normal/Reconstructed Audio Selection
A NORMAL/AC field is located to the left of the UP and DOWN fields. The operator can
position the highlight to this field by using the left arrow key from the UP or DOWN field.
The operator can then toggle between hearing normal or reconstructed audio.
In the Normal Mode the channel audio is monitored from the Recorder’s Acquisition Proc-
essor PWA prior to being written into flash memory in the Crash Storage Memory Unit.
In the Reconstructed Mode the channel audio is monitored from the “reconstructed” digi-
tized audio which has been stored in the flash memory of the CSMU.
5.3.1.3
Monitor menu Settings
The settings that the operator has chosen on the Monitor menu persist even when the op-
erator leaves the Monitor menu to perform functions at other PI menus.
5.3.2
Playback Menu
The operator can enter this menu only when there is no record bias on the CVR. No re-
cord bias means that this function will not work on the aircraft. As soon as power is ap-
plied to the recorder on the aircraft, the unit is supplied a bias signal that puts it into a re-
cord mode of operation. Attempting to enter this menu when the CVR is recording will
result in a message “ CVR is recording” to appear on the menu for several seconds. The
menu will then revert back to the Main Menu.
5.3.2.1
Keypad Key Remapping During Playback
When the Playback Menu is selected, the keypad keys are remapped as shown on the
Playback Menu in Figure 5
3. A diagram at the lower right of the menu indicates the new
mapping. The keys now perform the functions that would be used in a tape recorder. The
up arrow key is a PLAY key. The middle key is a STOP key.
