2-2.1.2  Red Expansion Port 

The 

RED EXPANSION PORT

 is a PCMCIA expansion slot for the addition of future applications. 

2-2.1.3  Red Serial Data Port 1 

The 

RED SERIAL DATA PORT 1

 interface can be configured for either EIA-530A or EIA-232 using the 

STE HMI menu.  At this port, the STE functions as a DCE (Data Communication Equipment) interface. 

2-2.1.4  Red Serial Data Port 2 

The 

RED SERIAL DATA PORT 2

 is installed in the Data STE, STE-R, and STE-RT units.  It is reserved 

for future capabilities but may also be used to provide a hard reset for the STE. 

2-2.1.5 Power 

Port 

The 

POWER PORT

 is a DB9 connector used to connect to the STE Power Supply. 

2-2.1.6 ISDN 

Port 

The 

ISDN PORT

 is an S/T interface (RJ-45 connector) used to connect to the ISDN service. 

2-2.1.7  ISDN Selector Switches 

The 

ISDN TERMINATION SWITCHES

 are used to set the ISDN characteristics.  For point-to-point ISDN 

Mode (the only mode currently supported), they are set to the “ON” (up) position. 

2-2.2 

Ports Located in the Wedges 

2-2.2.1 PSTN 

Port 

The 

PSTN PORT

 is an RJ-11 connector located on the rear of the conventional PSTN Wedge and the 

International PSTN Wedge. 

2-2.2.2 TRI-TAC 

Port 

Located in the rear of the Tactical STE and STE-RT, the 

TRI-TAC PORT

 is either a Molex connector (on 

older versions of the STE) or four spring-loaded terminal posts (on the newer STE versions).  Use this 
port to connect your STE to the TRI-TAC service. 

2-2.2.3  Black Digital Interface (EIA-530A/EIA-232) Port 

The Black Digital Interface port or the 

BDI PORT

, is a 25-pin D-connector located in the rear of both the 

Tactical STE and the STE-RT. You will use this port to connect to the BDI service.  You can configure the 
port as either an EIA-530A or EIA-232 via selections in the STE HMI menu. 

2-3. GENERAL 

PRE-INSTALLATION 

REQUIREMENTS 

Before you install your STE, you should determine the following: 

•

 

Identify the type of STE you wish to install (CEU, Office STE, STE-R, STE-RI, STE-RT, Digital 
STE or Tactical STE). 
You can connect an Office STE or STE-R to either an ISDN or PSTN. 
You can connect a Tactical STE or a STE-RT to ISDN, PSTN, TRI-TAC (TRI Service TACtical 
network), or a serial EIA-530A/EIA-232 network (referred to as a Black Digital Interface (BDI)). 
A CEU or STE-RI can only be connected to ISDN. 
Ensure you have a complete STE, with all components of the STE type you are installing

The telephone service (PSTN, ISDN, TRI-TAC, BDI) to which the STE will be connected.   
For some applications to be enabled, the STE must be connected to an ISDN network. 
Ensure your telephone line functions properly.

Identify where you will locate the STE within the facility

Ensure your STE has access to a power source. See Paragraph

Verify the proper connections for each type service are available at the desired location.
