Figure 1-2. Typical Office/Tactical STE Desk Set
The Tactical STE Desk Set provides access to ISDN, PSTN (Conventional only), TRI-TAC (TRI-service
TACtical), and serial EIA-530A/EIA-232 BDI (Black Digital Interface) telecommunications systems for
voice and data operation. The Tactical STE operates under local control (dial pad) for voice and data
operation and under remote control, via a connected PC, for data operations.
The Tamper Seals, one on each side, are security seals that will tear or the image will distort if an attempt
is made to open the STE. The STE shall never be opened by anyone except an L-3 Communication
Systems technician or a person authorized by L-3 Communication Systems - East. For additional
information, please refer to
Both desk sets may be equipped with either a Standard Handset or an optional Push-To-Talk (PTT)
Handset, part number K10046394-2.
Both STE desk sets provide:
•
Non-secure voice: telephone service interoperable with conventional ISDN and PSTN
telephones, STE and STU-III (Secure Telephone Unit Type III) terminals, Narrowband devices
(i.e., OMNI™ and wireless FNBDT (Future Narrow Band Digital Terminal) and DNVT (Digital
Non-secure Voice Terminals),
•
Secure voice: interoperable with other STE, STU-III, or SCIP (FNBDT) Terminals like the
OMNI™ Terminals.
•
Secure facsimile: interoperable with FAX units supported by other STE, STU-III, or SCIP
Terminals like the OMNI™ Terminals, and;
•
Secure data: interoperable with PCs supported by STE, STU-III, or SCIP Terminals like the
OMNI™ Terminals.
NOTE
The new acronym “
SCIP
” (for
Secure Communication Interoperability Protocol
)
was adopted in 2004 to replace “
FNBDT
” (
Future Narrowband Digital Terminal
).
1-2. DATA STE AND STE-R TERMINALS
The STE-R Terminals (CEU, DATA-STE, STE-R, STE-RT, and STE-RI) consist of two parts, the STE
and, for some, a Wedge. The STE contains ISDN and data processing circuits common to all STE
configurations. The Wedge, when used, is unique to each configuration.
•
The Data STE, STE-R and STE-RT, shown in
, are equipped with a Wedge to provide
specific interfaces. The STE-R is equipped with a PSTN wedge. The STE-RT is equipped with a
Tactical Wedge.
•
The CEU and STE-RI shown in
, do not have a Wedge. Both are mounted to a plate
and rack mounted for special applications (e.g., Secure Voice Conferencing System).
