NOTES
1. The 128 and 112 kbps data rates are achieved by splitting and sending the
data stream over two bonded STE/ISDN channels. The 115.2 kbps data rate
is achieved by splitting and sending the data stream over two ISDN channels.
The two channels are established by the initiating STE making two telephone
calls, i.e., one to
establish the first channel and one to establish the second
channel. You only make the first call. The STEs accomplish the second call
automatically.
During the establishment of the first call, the far-end sends the telephone
number of the second (bonded) channel to the initiating STE, the initiating
STE calls the number, and the second channel and full data rate are thereby
established.
2. This is the connect rate. The effective data transfer rate is lower.
3. PSTN is available for Office, Tactical, Data STE, STE-R, and STE-RT only.
4. When in the STU-III mode, the data rate selected does not guarantee that the
connection will be made at that speed, as line conditions affect the data rate
at which communication to the far-end can be established. Poor line
conditions could cause the STEs to establish a secure connection at a data
rate lower than that set for the data port. The connect data rate is displayed
to you.
5. When more than one service is connected, and you change services in the
“ACTIVE Network Port” display, it may be necessary to reset the STE. After
you select a new service (i.e., change from PSTN to ISDN), press
MODE +
MUTE
to reset the terminal. In addition, when you change from PSTN or
ISDN to TRI-TAC or BDI, you must cycle the power (disconnect and
reconnect the power supply at the receptacle) to reset the wedge. This must
also be done if you change between TRI-TAC and BDI.
8-2.1 Rate
Negotiation
The Rate Negotiation feature (automatically invoked when needed) allows a STE and a far-end terminal –
configured at different data rates – to connect and perform secure data communications.
There are many reasons for two terminals having different data rates. For example, 1) the two terminals
might have different on-hook settings for their secure data applications (see section 5.3.1), furthermore,
2) data rates can be restricted based on the combination of security strapping and network type (see
Paragraph
). Either of these cases might lead to different data rate configurations, which in the past
resulted in failed data calls.
With Rate Negotiation, as long as two terminals are set up for the same mode (either asynchronous or
synchronous) and can negotiate in at least one common signaling plan (STE-210, SCIP, or STU-III), a
STE terminal will be able to perform secure data communications with a far-end terminal.
