Speed test with the DOCSIS analyzer
The speed test (data throughput test) is a test function to determine the data rate that can be
actually achieved both in the uplink and the downlink. You can combine it with the PING test and
the downstream duty factor to get a very detailed clue of the HFC network’s performance.
The data throughput test is based on FTP (file transfer protocol). For an uplink test, data is loaded
onto a FTP server connected to the head end. For a downlink test, a file with a known file path and
size is downloaded from this server. The time required for uploading or downloading is measured.
In combination with the known file sizes, this time is used to determine the achieved data rate.
For detailed information on the speed test, please refer to application note “AN004 – DOCSIS 3.0
Analyzer”. You can find this at www.kws-electronic.de, in the support section (“SUPPORT” –>
“Application Notes”).
In order for the speed test to be performed, registration between the DOCSIS modem and the head
end must be fully completed, meaning that the measuring instrument must have the “Operational”
stack status. You cannot open the submenus for performing a speed test before this point. Select
MODE
to open a selection menu that, among others, contains both options for the speed test
Speed Test Downlink
and
Speed Test Uplink
