MAINTENANCE OF TURBOCHARGER
1/4
1.
INTRODUCTION
This Product Information Sheet aims to provide guidance on how to maintain the turbocharger of Kohler
engines.
2.
INSPECTION OF THE TURBOCHARGER
The inspection and possible repair of turbochargers must be carried out by one of Kohler official or
authorised Repair Shops.
A turbocharger is a critical component to ensure correct operation of the engine. If the turbocharger does not work
correctly, the engine will not perform as initially specified. Therefore, the turbocharger must undergo a simple
inspection consisting of four checks (that do not require removing the turbocharger), namely:
-
Check for axial play
: Apply force axially on the shaft and check that there is no axial clearance.
-
Check for radial play:
Apply force radially on the shaft and check that there is no radial clearance.
-
Rotation
: Push one of the wheels inwards, while turning it with your hand at the same time in order to
detect friction or seizure. Repeat this process on the opposite side. The wheels must rotate freely, without
touching the casing, turbo plate or turbine insert.
-
Blade condition
: Visually inspect the blades of compressor and turbine, with a lamp, to see if they are
very dirty or contain foreign materials. Check the wheels, casings and turbine inserts for scratches. Verify
if there are blade edges bent, cracked or indented. Check clearance between blade and casing.
