Bonding System Basic Service and Maintenance
Sacrificial zinc anodes
can extend the life of your boat’s FRP hull, engines, rudders,
propeller shafts, engine cooling systems and air conditioning condenser units and other
equipment that comes in contact with sea water, by protecting them from the
deterioration caused by galvanic corrosion.
Rate of deterioration for sacrificial zincs can, and will, vary from location to location.
This is because ‘stray’ electrical current in the sea water will vary from location to
location due to neighboring boats that are ‘hot’, tidal current, height of the tide in the
harbor, salinity, water temperature and condition of the boat’s zincs.
The Shaft Brush Anodes (technically not an anode because it’s not underwater) should be
checked weekly and the contact area between the anode and the propeller shafts should
be wiped down with a clean soft cloth. Oil and film residue on the shaft at the point of
anode contact can cause two problems. First, the contact may be left
open
(no contact)
when the boat is left unattended, leaving the propeller shafts with no corrosion protection.
Second, while underway, the rapid connection and disconnection (“bouncing”) of the
anode on the propeller shaft can cause inference with some electronic and navigational
equipment.
At least once a month, between annual haul-outs, it is recommended that a qualified diver
dive under the vessel to check the zincs. As a rule of thumb,
if a zinc is 50% corroded
, it
should be replaced. This check should be done whenever you arrive at a new marina
(either at anchor or at the dock) if you intend to stay more than three days
or
a new
boating neighbor has arrived at your marina. This initial check will establish a base line
for the condition of the zincs. After one week, the diver should dive under the vessel
again to determine the rate of deterioration. An increase in zinc deterioration could
indicate a problem with the shore power, or a ‘hot’ neighbor’s boat.
At the end of the season, if an anode has not deteriorated it may not be doing its job for
several reasons. Check that all anodes are of the same material. See Caution Box below.
Also check that the anodes are fastened snug against the metal they are intended to
protect. An anode that is even slightly loose will not be doing its job. After these checks,
if an anode still appears to have not deteriorated, there is a possibility that the anode
contains impurities which could make the anode ineffective.
CAUTION
A missing or undetected ground fault at a dock, especially in fresh water, can
cause a paralyzing low level current to flow to anyone in the water. Before
getting in the water, check with the Dockmaster to ensure the ground for the
dock’s electrical system is in good condition.
