Winterizing
247
Winterizing
Winterizing is the process of preparing your vessel for long term storage in sub-freezing
weather. The process is similar to De-Commissioning except the vessel will be stored
where air temperatures are expected to
drop below freezing.
If you do not plan on using your vessel during the winter months, you will need to go
through a process for each system similar to those discussed below. It is strongly
recommended that you discuss with your local boat yard professional additional or
alternative procedures that will best protect your vessel based on local weather, custom
and practices and your ability to check on the vessel at least once a week.
This checklist
assumes a weekly visit to the vessel.
Be particularly concerned about
wind, rain and the accumulation of snow and ice
.
Make certain all
scuppers
are clear and free of debris on each visit. Rain water trapped in
a scupper line can freeze and cause significant damage to the discharge line. Cover
Engine Room vents and dryer vent with plastic and check on each visit. It is not
necessary to cover fuel tank vents, water tank vent, or holding tank vent as they are each
protected from ‘critter’ entrance by a screen. Ensure all dock lines are protected against
chafing.
Air Conditioning
The following winterizing procedure should be followed:
1.
Turn
OFF
all SMXir units.
2.
Turn
OFF ALL
the Air Conditioning circuit breakers on the 120/240V AC
Distribution Panels No. 1 and No. 2.
3.
Turn
OFF
the circuit breaker labeled ‘
AIR CONDITION S.W. PUMP
’ on the
120/240V AC Distribution Panels No. 1.
4.
Turn
OFF
the circuit breakers labeled ‘
#1 CONDENSATE DRAIN PUMP
’ and
‘
#2 CONDENSATE DRAIN PUMP
’ on the 24V DC Main Panel Disconnect.
5.
Close
all seacocks for the raw water intake.
6.
Disconnect
the hose connecting each seacock and the sea strainer
at the seacock
and drain the water.
7.
Pour
a small amount of antifreeze
into
the seacock (down the opening where the
hose connected).
8.
Open
the valve at the bottom of each sea strainer and drain all the water into the
bilge.
9.
Disconnect
the hoses connecting each air conditioning unit and the sea strainer
at
the sea strainer
and drain the all water from both units into the bilge.
CAUTION
We have only briefly touched on these procedures. Consult each individual
equipment owner's manuals for complete details.
