De-Commissioning

Propulsion Engines and Transmissions
The engine is cooled by both the
heat exchanger
, which is filled with a mixture of
antifreeze, distilled water, and additives, and the
raw water system
which circulates raw
water in the engine and discharges the raw water overboard. Assuming the heat
exchanger has been maintained with the proper coolant mix and level, there is no special
de-commissioning procedure for this part of the engine cooling system. The raw water
system does need to be de-commissioned and the following procedure should be followed
for each engine and transmission:
1.
Start
the engine and let it get warm.
2.
Stop
the engine.
3.
Change
the oil and oil filter element while the engine is warm.
4.
Close
the seacock for the raw water intake.
5.
Disconnect
the hose connecting the seacock and the sea strainer
at the seacock
and drain the water into the bilge.
6.
Open
the valve at the bottom of the sea strainer and drain all the water into the
bilge.
7.
Disconnect
the hose connecting the water pump and the sea strainer
at the sea
strainer
and drain the all water into the bilge.
8.
Close
globe
valve to shaft seal.
9.
Prepare
a 5 gallon bucket of 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water.
10.
Run the engine
until all water is discharged from the raw water system (until
discharge out of the exhaust system STOPS) and then
STOP
the engine.
11.
Using the hose from the water pump or a replacement pickup hose, put the hose
end into the
five gallon bucket
of antifreeze and distilled water.
12.
Start
the engine and let it run until the antifreeze mixture starts to exit the exhaust
system.
13.
Stop
the engine.
14.
Loosen
the cover on the water pump and let all water drain.
15.
You may want to consider
removing
impeller (replace with new one during re-
commissioning).
16.
Seal
the air filter intake with plastic and DUCT tape.
17.
Loosen
tension on the alternator belt.
18.
Open
the valve at the bottom of the muffler in the Lazarette and drain all water.
19.
Mop up all water.
20.
Store leftover
50/50 mix of anti-freeze and distilled water in suitable container.
21.
Close
the fuel supply and return supply valves.
22.
Wipe down
the engine and spray it with WD-40.
23.
Change the oil
in the transmission.
Raw Water Washdown
The following de-commissioning procedure should be performed:
1.
Turn
OFF
the circuit breaker label ‘
SALT WATER PUMP
’ on the 24V DC
Main Panel Disconnect.
2.
Close
the raw water intake seacock for the raw water washdown pump.
