Krogen 58’ Manual, Hull 58014
Propulsion System – Engines and Transmission
153
Stop the engine immediately if there are any signs of part failure. Symptoms that may be
early signs of engine problems are:
•
Abnormal coolant temperatures
•
Excessive
black
exhaust
•
Excessive fuel consumption
•
Fluid leaks
•
Sudden drop in oil pressure
•
Sudden loss of power
•
Unusual noise or vibration
Starting the Engines
The
key
start is only in the Pilothouse. The engines can be started and stopped from the
Flybridge, but the key is in the Pilothouse.
Do the following
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINES
for the first time each day:
1.
Check each engines oil level
on the dipstick. Add as required, using seasonal
viscosity grade oil.
2.
Check that there is oil in each
transmission
.
3.
Check engines and transmissions for
leaks
, cracks, and obvious damage.
4.
Check engine and transmission
mountings
for tightness or any damage.
5.
Check all
lines, hoses, belts, and fittings
on engines and transmissions.
6.
Check the
cooling system hoses
for cracks and for loose clamps.
7.
Check the
coolant level
in each engines expansion tank when engines are
cold
.
Coolant level should not drop below the
‘COLD’
mark on the expansion tank.
Fill with proper coolant solution as required.
8.
Check raw sea water strainers are in
OPEN
position and clean as required.
9.
Check that
globe valves
for the raw water cooling/lubrication for the Tides shaft
seal are
OPEN
.
10.
Check
fuel filter bowls
and clean as necessary.
11.
Make a
thorough inspection
of the engine compartment. Look for oil or coolant
leaks, worn drive belts, loose connections, and trash. Remove trash and make
repairs as needed.
CAUTION
This check will determine that there is oil in the transmission but WILL NOT
determine if oil level is correct. Transmission oil level check MUST be
performed with engine operating at low idle with transmission in neutral and
oil temperature in normal operating range.
CAUTION
Only remove engine coolant filler cap when engine is cold OR when cool enough
to touch with bare hands. Slowly loosen cap to first stop to relieve pressure
before removing completely.
