Chapter 5 Copper Testing
Cord compensation

battery/wetting current. Although the detector will work with voltage on a
pair, accuracy will be reduced. In addition, the detector works best when
the last coil is followed by at least 1200 feet (336 meters) of cable.
The test begins automatically and results appear on the screen.
To learn what your results mean, see Chapter 7 “Interpreting Test Results” .
You can save your results, if desired. See “Saving results” on page 58 .
You are finished performing measurements.
Cord compensation
For greatest accuracy, JDSU recommends that you perform a cord compensa-
tion to remove the effects of the test leads from the test measurements. There
are two scenarios for compensation: all leads open and all leads shorted.
To compensate for the cords
1 From the main menu, select COPPER TEST .
2 Press the 4 key to select SETUP.
The SETUP menu appears.
3 Press the 8 key to select CORD COMP.
4 Follow the instructions on the screen to connect the black, red, and green
leads to perform test lead compensation.
5 Press the # key to start.
The compensation stops automatically when finished.
Calibrating the unit
On occasion, your unit may need calibration to maintain accuracy of the copper
test functions. This built-in calibration replaces the need for factory calibration.
To calibrate the unit
1 From the main menu, select COPPER TEST .
2 Press the 5 key to select CALIBRATION.
An acknowledgement screen appears.
3 Select OK to continue the calibration.
The ADSL/Copper Tester performs a self calibration. The self-calibration
values are stored in internal memory.
4 Press Cancel to return to the COPPER TEST menu.
