RADIATOR SERVICE
The radiator is mounted between the hydraulic oil
cooler and engine-cooling fan. The oil cooler is
mounted in front of the radiator and behind a remov-
able dust screen. The dust screen should be removed
and cleaned after each use. Hydraulic oil cooler service
is covered in Section 8.
Changing Coolant
1. Shut off the engine and remove the ignition key.
Allow the engine to cool completely.
2. Remove the radiator cap and open the drain pet-
cock located on the bottom of the radiator
(Figure 3D-6). Drain the coolant into a suitable
container.
3. With the petcock open, flush the inside of the radi-
ator with fresh water.
4. Fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of good qual-
ity ethylene glycol base antifreeze and clean fresh
water.
5. Install the radiator cap and start the engine follow-
ing the instructions in the Safety & Operation Man-
ual.
6. The engine allows air to circulate through the radi-
ator, cooling the antifreeze/water mixture (cool-
ant). If the core becomes clogged with dust and
dirt, or the cooling fins are bent, the radiator will
not cool properly.
7. Remove the dust screen. Using low-pressure
compressed air blow dust and debris from the
radiator core (Figure 3D-6).
CAUTION
Never remove the radiator cap when the coolant is
hot. The engine must be shut off and cooled before
the radiator cap is removed. Very hot coolant will be
sprayed from the radiator if the cap is loosened
before the engine has cooled. Serious personal
injury can occur.
NOTICE
It is illegal to dispose of most antifreeze in an inap-
propriate manner. Always dispose of antifreeze
according to local environment laws and regulations.
Contact local environment personnel for information
on disposal methods.
!
CAUTION
Always use a mixture of ethylene glycol base anti-
freeze and fresh water in the engine cooling system.
Normally a 50/50 coolant mixture will provide freeze
protection to -37°F (-38°C) and boil over protection
in an efficient cooling system.
WARNING
Always wear eye protection when using compressed
air. Never use compressed air in excess of 20 psi
(138 kPa) for cleaning purposes. Never point the air
nozzle at another individual; serious personal injury
can occur from contact with compressed air.
Do not use screwdrivers or sharp tools to clean the
radiator core. Sharp edges can damage the core
and cause coolant leaks. Use commercially avail-
able fins tools for repair of bent fins.
