8. If you have other options to install, install them now. Otherwise, continue with
“Installing the cover” on page 15.
Working with hard disk drives
Your server supports two 26-mm (1-in.), slim, 3.5-inch hot-swappable hard disk drives.
If a ServeRAID adapter in a RAID 1 configuration and a hot-swap SCSI backplane are
installed in your server, you can hot-swap hard disk drives without interrupting
processing and without data loss.
Note: See the User’s Reference and the ServeRAID documentation on the IBM
xSeries 330 Type 8675 Documentation CD for information on ServeRAID
adapters and hot-swapping hard disk drives.
Hard disk drive considerations
Before you install a hard disk drive, review the following:
• Inspect the drive tray for any signs of damage.
• Ensure that the drive is installed properly in the tray.
• To maintain proper system cooling, do not operate the server for more than 2
minutes without either a drive or a filler panel installed in each bay.
• If your server has a ServeRAID adapter installed, see the documentation provided
with the ServeRAID adapter for information about adding a drive.
• You can hot-swap a hard disk drive without interrupting processing and without
data loss only if the hot-swap SCSI backplane and a ServeRAID adapter that is
configured as RAID 1 are installed in your system. If you use any other
ServeRAID or SCSI configuration, you cannot hot-swap a hard disk drive; you
must turn the server off and unplug the power cord before installing or replacing a
drive.

Installing a hard disk drive
Some models of the xSeries 330 come with empty drive bays and a SCSI backplane.
The xSeries 330 Type 8675 supports hot-swap SCSI hard disk drives.
Attention: When you handle static-sensitive devices, take precautions to avoid
damage from static electricity. For details on handling these devices, see “Handling
static-sensitive devices” on page 3.
Notes:
1. A hard disk drive is replaced in the same manner as a new hard disk drive is
installed, but you must remove the old hard disk drive first.
2. If your server has a ServeRAID adapter and a SCSI backplane installed, and if
the ServeRAID adapter is configured as RAID 1, you can hot-swap SCSI drives.
Otherwise, you must turn the server off and unplug the power cord before
installing or replacing a drive. For more information about hot-swapping drives,
see the documentation provided with the ServeRAID adapter and the
User’s
Reference on the IBM Documentation CD.
Complete the following steps to install or replace a hot-swap SCSI hard disk drive:
1. Review the safety precautions beginning on page v.
2. Remove the filler panel from one of the hard disk drive bays.
