IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node Introduction and Implementation Guide
There are six standard kinds of ports; those ports used with IBM Flex System V7000 Storage
Node are listed here:
Node ports (N_Port): These ports are found in Fibre Channel nodes, which are defined to
be the source or destination of information units (IU). I/O devices and host systems
interconnected in point-to-point or switched topologies use N_Ports for their connection.
N_Ports can only attach to other N_Ports or to F_Ports.
Fabric ports (F_Port): These ports are found in Fibre Channel switched fabrics. They are
not the source or destination of IUs, but instead function only as a “middle-man” to relay
the IUs from the sender to the receiver. F_Ports can only be attached to N_Ports.
Expansion ports (E_Port): These ports are found in Fibre Channel switched fabrics and
are used to interconnect the individual switch or routing elements. They are not the source
or destination of IUs, but instead function like the F_Ports to relay the IUs from one switch
or routing elements to another. E_Ports can only attach to other E_Ports.
The E-Port is not strictly used within the chassis but, as shown in the example in Figure 11-38
on page 495, it can be used to connect to external SAN fabric switches. Thus it allows
integration of the SAN fabric at switching level for IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node to
access and manage external storage controllers.
11.5.4 Zoning a compute node for storage allocation
Connectivity over Fibre Channel between the compute nodes and IBM Flex System V7000
Storage Node is achieved through the adapter in the computer node and Fibre Channel
switches in the IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis I/O Module slots. In this section, we will
look at the connectivity between the FC switches in IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis I/O
Module slots 3 and 4 and configure zones to an IBM Flex System x240 Compute Node. The
FC switches used are the IBM Flex System FC3171 8Gb SAN Switch models.
Although the SAN connecting components are within the IBM Flex System Enterprise
Chassis with both FC switches in I/O Module slots, the result is a basic and small pair of SAN
fabrics. Each have the capability of connecting to external SAN fabrics as they have external
ports (label 2 in Figure 11-41 on page 499). Also, within the chassis, there will be a
requirement to segregate FC initiators from each other and maintain separation of compute
nodes. For this reason, SAN zoning rules must be applied and the IBM Flex System FC3171
8Gb SAN Switch in each slot must be zoned, as follows:
In each fabric, create a zone with just the four IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node two
from each node canister.
If there is an external storage system to be virtualized, then in each fabric, create a zone
with the four IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node WWPNs, two from each node
canister, along with up to a maximum of eight WWPNs from the external storage system.
Assuming every host has a Fibre Channel connection to each fabric, then in each fabric,
create a zone with the host WWPN and one WWPN from each node canister in the IBM
Flex System V7000 Storage Node system.
For Metro Mirror and Global Mirror configurations, zone two Fibre Channel ports on each
node canister in the local system to two Fibre Channel ports on each node canister in the
remote system.
Max Storage ports: IBM Flex System V7000 Storage Node supports a maximum of 16
storage ports from a given external storage that is virtualized.
