2.
Using the management module Web interface, verify the following items:
v
The compute node firmware is at the latest version.
v
SOL is enabled for the compute node.
v
The CD or DVD drive or USB flash drive is selected as the first boot device for the compute node.
3.
Insert diagnostic media.
v
If you are using a stand-alone diagnostics CD, plugin the external optical drive (CD- and
DVD-compatible) with a USB connection and insert the stand-alone diagnostics CD into the CD or
DVD drive.
v
If you are using a USB flash drive, insert the USB flash drive that has stand-alone diagnostic image
copied in it.
4.
Turn on the compute node and establish a Serial over LAN (SOL). For information about starting an
SOL session, see the IBM Chassis Management Module Command-Line Interface Reference Guide.
Note:
It can take several minutes to load the stand-alone diagnostics from the CD or flash drive.
The window displays
Please define the System Console.
5.
Type

and press Enter to continue.
The Diagnostic Operating Instructions window is shown.
6.
Press Enter to continue.
The Function Selection window is shown. See “Using the diagnostics program” on page 455 for more
information about running the diagnostics program.
Note:
If the Define Terminal window is shown, type the terminal type and press Enter. The use of
vs100 as the terminal type is preferred. However, the function keys might not work. In this case, press
Esc and the number on the menus. For example, instead of F3, you can press Esc+3.
7.
When testing is complete, press F3 until the Diagnostic Operating Instructions window is shown, and
then press F3 again to exit the diagnostic program.
8.
Remove diagnostic media.
v
If you are using a stand-alone diagnostics CD, remove the CD from the CD or DVD drive.
v
If you are using a USB flash drive, remove the USB flash drive.
Starting stand-alone diagnostics from a NIM server
Perform this procedure to start the stand-alone diagnostics from a Network Installation Management
(NIM) server.
About this task
Note:
See Network Installation Management in the AIX Information Center for information about
configuring the compute node as a NIM server client. Also see the Configuring the NIM Master and
Creating Basic Installation Resources Web page.
Procedure
1.
Verify with the system administrator and system users that the compute node can be shut down. Stop
all programs, and then shut down the operating system and shut down the compute node. See the
documentation that comes with your operating system for information about shutting down the
operating system.
