Installing an expansion unit
Attention: If a high-speed expansion card is installed in the blade server system
board, you cannot install an expansion unit.
To install an expansion unit, complete the following steps.

1. Touch the static-protective package that contains the expansion unit to any
unpainted metal surface on the BladeCenter unit or any unpainted metal surface
on any other grounded rack component; then, remove the expansion unit from
the package.
2. Orient the expansion unit above the blade server.
3. Lower the expansion unit so that the slots at the rear slide down onto the cover
pins at the rear of the blade server.
4. Close the expansion unit:

If the expansion unit has an extraction device, pivot the expansion unit
closed; then, use the extraction device to fully seat the expansion unit on the
system board. These extraction devices can be of several types, including
thumb screws or levers.
v If the expansion unit has no extraction device, pivot the expansion unit
closed; then, press the expansion unit firmly into place until the blade-cover
releases click.
The connectors on the expansion unit automatically align with and connect to
the connectors on the system board.
Note: Some expansion units have their own cover and do not require
installation of a separate cover.
5. Install the blade-server cover, if required (see“Installing the blade server cover”
on page 81).
6. Install the blade server into the BladeCenter unit (see “Installing the blade
server in a BladeCenter unit” on page 78 for instructions).
