When tape gets in either column (assume the left column), its flapper valve opens,

dropping R9.  The  manual  start  line  goes  down  (02E),  pushing  the  left  moving pulley
up  against  its  stop  capstan,  pinching the  tape.  The  tape  then  goes  into  the  other  c o l
umn,  dropping  RIO.  If  tape  were  not  pinched by  dropping R9,  the  left  column  would

take all the tape spilled from both reels.
