Power problems
v
Follow the suggested actions in the order in which they are listed in the Action column until the problem
is solved.
v
See Chapter 3, “Parts listing, System x3755 Type 8877 and 7163,” on page 25 to determine which
components are customer replaceable units (CRU) and which components are field replaceable units
(FRU).
v
If an action step is preceded by “(Trained service technician only),” that step must be performed only by a
trained service technician.
Symptom
Action
The server does not start.
Note:
The power-control button
will not function until 10
seconds after the server has
been connected to ac power.
1. Make sure that:
v
The power cords are correctly connected to the server and to a working
electrical outlet.
v
The type of memory that is installed is correct.
v
The microprocessor/memory cards are fully seated. See “Removing a
microprocessor/memory card” on page 51 and “Replacing a
microprocessor/memory card” on page 51.
v
The LEDs on the power supply do not indicate a problem.
v
The microprocessor/memory cards are installed in the correct sequence.
2. If the power-on LED does not flash:
a. Disconnect the server power cords.
b. Reconnect the power cords.
c. Reseat the operator information panel cables, and then repeat steps 2a and
2b. See See “Removing the operator information panel assembly” on page
66 and “Replacing the operator information panel assembly” on page 67.
v
If the server starts, reseat the operator information panel. If the problem
remains, replace the operator information panel. See “Removing the
operator information panel assembly” on page 66 and “Replacing the
operator information panel assembly” on page 67.
v
If the server does not start, bypass the operator information panel
power-control button by using the force-power-on jumper; if the server
starts, reseat the operator information panel. If the problem remains,
replace the operator information panel. See “Removing the operator
information panel assembly” on page 66 and “Replacing the operator
information panel assembly” on page 67.
3. Reseat the following components:
a. Microprocessor/memory cards. See “Removing a microprocessor/memory
card” on page 51 and “Replacing a microprocessor/memory card” on page
51.
b. Power switch connector
4. Replace the following components one at a time, in the order shown, restarting
the server each time:
a. Microprocessor/memory cards. See “Removing a microprocessor/memory
card” on page 51 and “Replacing a microprocessor/memory card” on page
51.
b. Power switch connector
c. (Trained service technician only) I/O board. See “Removing the I/O board
assembly” on page 68 and “Replacing the I/O board assembly” on page 69.
5. If you just installed an optional device, remove it, and restart the server. If the
server now starts, you might have installed more devices than the power
supplies support.
6. See “Power-supply LEDs” on page 119.
7. See “Solving undetermined problems” on page 175.
