7 Operating Principles
The Dopplex Ability is a medical device that can be used by relatively low-skilled operators to obtain ABPI
measurements rapidly and reliably.
The Ability uses unique dual-chamber DuoSense cuffs to occlude and detect the presence of blood flow. The
occlusion chamber is inflated until the blood flow is cut off, whilst the detect chamber is inflated to a constant
lower pressure of 45 mmHg and used to monitor blood flow distal to the occlusion chamber. By observing the
small pressure changes in the detect cuff that relate to blood flow in the limb to which they are fitted, the systolic
blood pressure is determined.
The cuffs are designed to fit the arms and ankles, and incorporate novel features to aid fitting and comfort.
Systolic blood pressure measurements are taken simultaneously from both arms and both ankles, and are
usually completed in less than three minutes.
