SMU
）
Overview
The SMU is the System Management Unit board of MA5200G-8 and MA5200G-4. The SMU board
integrates three major functional modules, main control module, data switch module and stratum-3
clock module. It mainly implements such global functions as access user management,
authentication charging, route processing, resource management, state monitor and network
management agent, and realizes the fast switch of fixed-length data packet on 8 × 8 port. It
provides stratum-3 clock.
MA5200G-8 and MA5200G-4 have ten and six slots respectively. Where, the SMU of both devices
has two slots. Each MA5200G-8 and MA5200G-4 should be configured with one or two SMUs. Two
SMUs are recommended. It can realize redundant backup of system control board to enhance
system reliability.
The outer appearance of the SMU is shown in the following.

On the MA5200G-8/4 SMU four external interfaces are provided: CONSOLE port (communication
serial port), AUX port (auxiliary communication serial port), 10/100/1000BASE-TX Ethernet port
and four stratum-3
clock coaxial ports.

CONSOLE port (RJ45)
It is a communication serial port, using RS-232 level. This
Console port is used to connect the background terminal
for debugging, configuring, maintaining, managing the
system and loading the host software program.
SMU
AUX port (RJ45)
It is an auxiliary communication serial port, using RS-232
level. The AUX port is used to connect the MODEM
device. It implements remote configuration, maintenance
and management through dial-up.
