Quidway® NetEngine 80 Core Router

OC-48c/STM-16c RPR Optical Interface Boards

Overview

The Quidway

®

NetEngine 80 core router (abbreviated to NE80) provides OC-48c/STM-16c RPR

optical interface boards to realize RPR networking.

Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is an international standard for establishing IP ring networks, offering a

highly efficient and reliable MAN networking technology. Compared with previous ring network

technologies, it features numerous unique advantages. Integrating the 50-ms protection switchover

and high reliability of SDH network and the packet switching and high bandwidth utilization of

Ethernet, and featuring low cost, easy realization and excellent scalability, RPR is one of the major

networking solutions for IP MANs.

CR-R1UL

RPR is mainly applied in networks that require high reliability, have better QoS feature and

bandwidth guarantee, and bear multiple integrated services. For example, RPR can be applied in

backbone and access of IP MANs, and in scattered government networks, enterprise networks and

campus networks.

The RPR board is used to form a RPR network between multiple NE80 core routers or between

other NE routers. The RPR network consists of the inner ring and outer ring. Currently, the 2.5G

RPR board provided by the NE80 has only one external optical interface, so at least two RPR

optical interface boards are required for each RPR to form inner and outer ring nodes. Thus, each

NE80 must be configured with an even number of RPR boards.

The OC-48c/STM-16c RPR optical interface board uses fixed optical modules and reaches a rate

up to 2.5 Gbps. You can choose the RPR boards with different transmission distances according to

networking requirements.
