MAINTENANCE
VALVE CLEARANCE CHECK/
ADJUSTMENT
Valve clearance inspection and adjustment must be
performed with the engine cold.
Remove the following:
– Fuel tank (page 5-3)
– Flange bolt (5 x 22 mm) [1] (4)
– Fuel tank mount stay [2]
– Cylinder head cover [3]
Pull the recoil starter and set the piston at top dead
center of the compression stroke.
(Align the cutout [1] in the flywheel fin or the boss on the
flywheel with the alignment mark "
△
" [2] on the fan
cover.)
If the exhaust valve opens when the cutout in the
flywheel fin is aligned with the alignment mark, turn the
recoil starter pulley one turn and align the marks.
Insert a feeler gauge [1] between the valve rocker arm
[2] and the valve and measure the valve clearance.
If adjustment is necessary, proceed as follows.
Loosen the lock nut [3] and adjust the valve clearance
by turning the adjusting screw [4] in or out.
• To increase valve clearance, screw out.
• To decrease valve clearance, screw in.
Holding the adjusting screw with a wrench, tighten the
lock nut to the specified torque.
After tightening the lock nut, check the valve clearance
again.
Reinstall the other removed parts in the reverse order of
removal.

VALVE CLEARANCE:
IN: 0.08 ± 0.02 mm (0.003 ± 0.001 in)
EX: 0.11 ± 0.02 mm (0.004 ± 0.001 in)
TORQUE: 5.4 N·m (0.55 kgf·m, 4.0 lbf·ft)
