10-4  MODE SELECTOR 

The mode selector allows choosing FOCUS mode or OPERATE mode. 
   

(1)  FOCUS mode 

This mode is used during adjustment of the optics to check whether there is light 
incident on the streak camera. The input light state is easy to check because no 
sweep is performed. The incident light in FOCUS mode is not time-resolved, so the 
photoelectrons from the photocathode tend to concentrate on one part of the 
phosphor screen. Consequently, an abnormally large current flows to the MCP and 
phosphor screen, which may damage the streak tube. During FOCUS mode, reduce 
the incident light to a sufficient low level and then start adjusting the optical axis. 
 

(2)  OPERATE mode 

This is for sweep mode and enables vertical sweep. Entering the trigger and 
high-frequency signal sets the timing to begin a sweep. 
 

10-5  GATE MODE 

10-5-1  GATE FUNCTION   

This system contains three gate modes. Gate functions operate when a voltage is applied to 
the photocathode or MCP. Gate utilizing the MCP are called the MCP gate, and gate utilizing 
the photocathode is called the photocathode gate. Select the gate mode according to the 
measurement purpose and the type of light to measure. Gate modes that can be set differ 
depending on the plug-in unit combinations. See chapter  11.Plug-in combinations and 
operating conditions, to find out which modes are actually usable.
