1 General

Instructions

1.1

These technical instructions refer to all GRÜN bitumen boil-
ers incl. burners and safety installations. They do not affect
official regulations, safety rules especially the “VBG 21 - ap-
plication of liquid gas” and guidelines of trade associations
and of DVGW, nor local regulations at the place of opera-
tion.

1.2

Bituminous, insulating, sealing and priming compunds are
prone to spontanuous ignition when overheated. During op-
eration, the bitumen boilers therefore have to be constantly
supervised by the operating crew. This also applies to ther-
mostatically controlled heating systems.

1.3

Bitumen boilers must be operated by persons only who are
familiar with handling of the units and of the heating installa-
tion.

1.4

GRÜN Bitumen boilers have been designed to be used
outdoors. For operation in closed areas or below ground
level, special accessories are required and special safety
measures to be observed.

1.5

No inflamable materials must be stored close to boilers
which are in operation.

Attention ! Danger of injury in

case of touching hot boiler parts.

1.6

Suitable fire-fighting material has to be held ready and to be
used for extinguishing bitumen material that may have
caught fire.: sand an foam or dry extinguishers.

Water must

not be used!

1.7

Boilers are to be fixed in a solid position. Prior to be used,
they have to undergo a safety check. They must not be posi-
tioned close to pits and digs or on inflamable underground.

1.8

It is to be observed that nobody can be endangered by es-
caping exhaust fumes.

1.9

Bitumen boilers must not be filled up beyound the filling
mark (90 % of the boiler volume). Refilling should be done
equivalent to the quantities which have been used up.
Attention when refilling: danger of splashing !! Prior to emp-
tying the boiler completely, the burner has to be turned off.

1.10  GRÜN bitumen boilers must be used only with regulated gas

pressure (1,5 bar). For safety reasons, a medium pressure
regulator with integrated hose failure valve (part.-no. 1541)
should be used and/or under ground level use gas safety
device for leakages.

1.11  Propane gas hoses are to be protected against damages

and checked every day. The general rules for application of
liquid gas are to be observed. High pressure hoses for liquid
gas only (pressure class 30 with 5 mm wall thickness, corr.
to DIN 4815, Part 1) are to be used.

1.12  Gas bottles schould be kept in vertical position, protected

against falling and against direct sunlight. Empty bottles
should be closed firmly.

1.13  It is not allowed to use open fire to speed up vaporization of

the gas.

1.14  Burner and safety installations have to be supervised during

operation.

1.15  Boilers with a capacity of more than 50 litres have to be

controlled thermostatically. This applies to Germany  - devi-
ating regulations of other countries have to be observed.
The adjustment of temperature at the thermostat resp. the
thermostat regulator has to match with the temperature
range of the thermometer.

1.16  Units with an exhaust gas chimney must not be used without

the chimney.

1.17  For units with electric motor, the VDE regulations 0100, §

55, have to be observed. Electrical power has to be supplied
by a special feeding point with FI protective switch (usually a
distributer for building sites). As connection a rubber cable
H07RN-F, suitable for building sites, with a cross section of
at least 2,5 mm² for each phase, should be used. This ap-
plies to Germany  - deviating regulations of other countries
have to be observed.

1.18  Modifications of the design or of the equipment by unauthor-

ized persons are not allowed.

2 Starting

work

2.1

Boilers with a usable capacity of up to 50 litres and
export models without automatic control unit.

2.1.1  The usable capacity, indicated by a mark in the drum, corre-

spons to 90% of the boiler capacity. The usable capacity is
embossed on the container and also indicated on the
typeplate of the burner. Prior to using the unit, make sure
that boiler and burner match with each other.

2.1.2  Fill the boiler with small pieces of bitumen, up to the filling

mark (see para. 1.9. !).

2.1.3  Screw medium pressure regulator with hosefailure valve

(GRÜN/1,5bar/10 kg/h) onto the gas bottle and control unit.
Make sure that all connections are leak-proof !

2.1.4  Close burner valve, then open valve of the gas bottle and

activate hose failure valve by pressing the button.
