HyDRAULIC / STEERING SySTEM TROUBLESHOOTING

Possible Cause

Remedy

Problem: Hydraulic pump making noise

Pump must receive intake fluid freely or cavita

tion will result. Drain system, clean intake line

and strainers. Add new fluid and strainer by

recommended procedures.

A. Restricted or partially clogged

intake filter

Test by pouring fluid on joints and around

driveshaft. Listen for change in operation.

Tighten joints and replace pump shaft seal.

B. Air leak at pump intake piping

joints or seal

Possible Cause

Remedy

Problem: Fluid leakage at actuating shaft of steering gear

Replace seal

A. Worn or damaged seal

Replace damaged parts. Lubricate bearing cap

more frequently.

B. Damaged actuating shaft seal

surface

Problem: Fluid leakage at output shaft of steering gear

Replace hydraulic filter element. Reduce filter

change interval.
