External Amplitude Modulation

(Series 12500A/12700A Only)

Linear AM

Press

[AM]

to select the modulation parameter. Refer to the modulation parameters and specifications

in Chapter 1 for detailed information.

NOTE:

Option 24 is available to provide internal AM, FM or PM and Option 29 is

available to provide Scan AM (Logarithmic AM).

Using Amplitude Modulation

Linear AM is characterized by a linear change in the peak-to-peak output voltage for a linear change of the

input voltage. This is ‘classical’ AM. The depth of modulation is expressed in percent. Modulation

acceptance of this instrument has a bandwidth of DC to 150 kHz.

Scaling

When using AM, the scaling parameter determines the percent of modulation produced per volt of input.

Scaling can be changed from 0.0 to 95.0%/V.

Depth

When using the Linear AM mode, the scaling parameter allows setting the depth of modulation (expressed in

%) directly if the input signal is 1 volt (2 V

P-P

). For input levels less than 1 volt (1 volt is the maximum allowed),

the depth is scaled appropriately.

Enabling AM

There is a softkey to allow turning AM on and off. When AM is off, the key label will read “Turn AM On”. When

AM is on, the key will read “Turn AM Off”. The LED next to the front panel AM button will illuminate when AM

is on.

Modulation inputs which are asymmetrical or that have a DC component will

shift the carrier power level.
