MAINTENANCE OF ALUMINIUM AND STAINLESS STEEL
Two types of protection are necessary for modern pleasure craft:
Protection of all submerged surfaces from animal and vegetable deposits,
Cathodic protection of the aluminium structure due to the presence of metals of
different potential.
The painting of surfaces which are not underwater (upper works) is only for aesthetic reasons.
Aluminium - even marine grade - undergoes a surface corrosion. Despite the care taken in the
preparation and application of paint, blistering may eventually appear over time. The
inconvenience is only aesthetic; the blisters are easy to remove when they are treated as soon
as they appear. Do not let the blisters grow; remove them as soon as they appear.

Maintenance-Repair of the paintwork (upper works):
An aluminium centerboard yacht is particularly easy to maintain, provided that you take
certain precautions with regards to the choice of products and their application in order to
avoid any chemical reaction between products;
Use high quality paint of an identical brand,
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely,
Do not hesitate to seek advice from the manufacturer or your Garcia Yachting adviser.
It is possible to carry out partial painting and joint repair work yourself by respecting the
following precautions:
Choose premises which are sheltered from dust and wind, with a temperature greater
than l5°C and between 40 and 70 % humidity,
Store the paint pots in the same premises 24 hours in advance,
Do not apply paint to surfaces being subject to harsh variations in temperature (following
sanding for example).
PRECAUTION
Rinse your boat with fresh water as often as possible, including steel parts and areas where
salt can concentrate.
Be careful to look after your yacht with products that are compatible with aluminium.
