furnace, which is housed in a smaller aluminium enclosure (7). The sample lines are attached
to the quartz tube by means of ultra-torr elbows (9) that have finger-tightened nuts to create
an adequate seal.
The reactions that decompose sulfur compounds take place inside a quartz reaction tube
inside the total sulfur enclosure. The quartz reaction tube is shown in Figure 3-21.

To install the quartz tube:
A steel tube is inserted at the factory for shipment purposes only. The steel
tube must be removed and replaced with the quartz tube before powering
up the analyzer.
a) Unscrew the nuts all the way on the reaction tube sides of the two ultra-torr elbows inside
the furnace assembly.
b) Carefully slide the new tube into the furnace. Slide the old nuts and ferrules onto the two
ends of the tube, as well as two new Kal-rez high temperature rubber o-rings. The correct
order is shown in the exploded view in Figure 3-22.

c) Slide the nut (4) with the threads facing toward the end of the tube, the ferrule (3) with the
narrower end facing toward the end of the tube, and the Kalrez high temperature O-ring
(3) over the end of the quartz reaction tube (5).
d) Slide the end of the tube into the end of the elbow (1) until it cannot be pushed in any
further. Carefully tighten the nut onto the elbow. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! This may
cause the tube to break. Tug on the elbow slightly after tightening to ensure that the
elbow is snugly attached to the end of the tube.
