8.3 Liquids suitable for suspension
As the sample liquid inside the device is only in direct con-
tact with materials that are resistant to chemicals, certain
organic liquids and saturated inorganic salt solutions can
be used in suspensions.
(Inside the unit, the sample liquid is in direct contact with
stainless steel, glass, Teflon and Viton (FPM or FKM). The
standard hose connections are made in Tygon.
For the processing of samples that cannot be dispersed in
water, one of the following liquids may be used:
Never use explosive or flammable liquids.
The following list of substances refers only to their
chemical compatibility in connection with the device .
Monohydric, dihydric or trihydric alcohol (with the exception
of methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, glycol or glycerol),
mineral and organic oils such as petroleum, soy oil, nut oil,
olive oil.
Do not use any other substances without first consulting
the manufacturer.
Never use:
Ketones (acetone, propanone, butanone, cyclohexanone,
etc.),
ether, fluorochlorocarbons,
amines, Freon 21-32,
methanol, phenylamine, benzene
chlorocarbons,
acetic acid and its derivatives,
concentrated acidic and alkaline
solutions.
Event for samples that are in oil form (e.g. mineral oil sam-
ples), it is not necessary to use oil for the processing.
Example: Toner in machine oil
The sample is first dispersed in the ultrasonic batch in eth-
ylene glycol to which little surfactant (Fairy Liquid) is
added. Subsequently, a 1:1 suspension with water is pro-
duced, which is filled into the ultrasonic bath of the "analy-
sette 22" laser particle sizer.
Example: Crude cocoa
The crude cocoa mass is normally processed in acetone or
benzine (similar to straining procedure). It is however also
possible to analyse the sample in peanut oil. As peanut oil
is a permitted for food processing, the spent oil may be
used as lubricant for the rollers so that there is no need to
dispose of the oil.
